Why angular gravel, not sand

Actual sand blows away and washes out. Crushed 2–4 mm granite or marble gravel behaves like sand visually but keeps a crisp raked line for weeks.

Accent stones

The gravel is the field; the composition comes from a handful of larger stones. We can supply matched accent cobbles and small boulders in the same tonal family in the same shipment.

Coverage for a raked bed

At the standard 50 mm depth, one tonne of 2–4 mm gravel covers roughly 13–15 square metres — slightly more than coarser decorative gravel because fine material packs tighter. For small retail zen kits, a 1–2 kg pouch typically covers a desktop tray of around 20×30 cm.

Alternative to true stone for indoor kits

For desktop and indoor kits sold through giftware channels, a very fine 1–2 mm marble or granite dust-free grade rakes more finely than garden-scale gravel and is easier to pack into small retail pouches without excessive dust.

A common mistake with rake lines

Choosing a rounded pea gravel because it looks similar in a photo. Rounded stone will not hold a rake pattern — the crushed, angular face of true zen garden gravel is what lets the rake teeth grip and hold a line over days without collapsing.

Colour variation between batches

Fine crushed granite and marble gravel used for raking can show subtle batch-to-batch tonal shifts, which is more noticeable in a fine, uniformly spread material than in a coarser gravel bed. We hold a reference sample for repeat orders and recommend buying the full tonnage for a single garden in one batch, since a visible tone change across a raked bed stands out far more than it would in a mixed pebble border.

Retail pouches versus bulk landscape supply

Desktop and giftware zen garden kits need small sealed pouches, typically 1–2 kg, with dust kept to a minimum for clean retail presentation, while landscaped courtyard gardens are supplied as bulk tonnage or bagged garden quantities. We pack the same fine gravel grade to either specification, so a buyer stocking both a garden centre range and a giftware line can source from one consistent batch.

Edging and containment for raked beds

A raked gravel garden needs a firm physical edge — timber, stone or metal edging — to stop the fine gravel migrating into surrounding planting or lawn areas, especially where the bed is swept or blown by wind. Without containment, the finest material at the surface is the first to scatter, which both loses stone from the bed and leaves the coarser remainder harder to rake cleanly.
