Calibrated vs riven

Calibrated slabs are machined to an even thickness so they lay fast on a consistent bed. Riven slabs vary and cost less to buy but more to lay. For retail patio packs, calibrated almost always wins on total cost.

Slip and frost

Tell us the climate. Dense sandstone and quartzite handle freeze-thaw and wet-area slip resistance better than soft, porous stone.

Coverage and pack sizing

A typical mixed-size patio pack is built to cover 15–20 square metres per pallet including a standard 8–10% cutting waste allowance; ordering exact area without a waste margin usually leaves a buyer short by one pallet on an irregular layout.

Flagstone versus poured concrete slabs

Natural flagstone costs more per square metre than cast concrete paving but does not fade uniformly or chip to reveal a grey core, so patch repairs blend in years later — a real advantage over concrete, where a single replaced slab often stands out visibly against the weathered rest of the patio.

Palletising and breakage on long routes

Slabs are stacked on edge with timber dunnage between layers and steel-strapped to the pallet, with corner protectors on sawn edges; on long ocean routes this reduces edge chipping far more effectively than flat stacking, which lets slabs shift and grind against each other in transit.

Sample approval and pre-shipment inspection

We send sample pieces or a small pack showing the actual colour range, riven texture and thickness tolerance before a full pallet order is cut and loaded, since flagstone colour can vary meaningfully between quarry lots. Pallets are also checked for consistent thickness within the agreed tolerance before strapping, since uneven thickness is the most common issue a laying contractor flags on site.

Drainage and jointing at the sub-base

Flagstone patios need a compacted, free-draining sub-base and, for mortar-bedded work, weep points or a slight fall to prevent water sitting beneath the slabs, which can cause staining or frost heave in cold climates. For dry-laid, gravel-jointed patios, drainage is less critical since water passes between joints directly, but the base still needs to be free-draining to avoid soft spots developing under slabs over time.

Retail patio packs versus contractor bulk supply

Homeowner-facing retail patio packs are sized to cover a fixed area, typically 15–20 square metres per pallet with a built-in waste allowance, and often include a randomised size mix ready to lay. Contractors ordering for larger commercial paving usually specify by exact tonnage and size band rather than a pre-mixed retail pack, since they are laying to a defined pattern rather than a random domestic layout.
