Working from a project specification
Send the specification extract rather than a summary. Architects typically fix colour, size band and sometimes source or finish, and a summary tends to drop the clause that matters. Where a written specification cannot be met exactly with natural stone, we say so and propose the nearest achievable option in writing, so you have something to take back to the design team rather than a surprise on site.
Grades used on construction projects
The recurring lines are drainage and filter aggregate, gabion fill, ground cover for landscaped areas, decorative chips for external finishes, and larger cobbles or boulders for feature and retaining work. Paving elements — flagstone, cobble setts, stepping units — come in where hardscape is part of the same package.
Each of these has a different tolerance sensitivity. Drainage aggregate is about grading and cleanliness; architectural chip is about colour; gabion fill is about size and shape stability.
Volume, phasing and reserve
Large projects rarely take the whole quantity at once. Where a programme runs in phases, we prefer to reserve material from the same batch for later phases rather than re-source it months later.
