Marble Chips for Driveways and Parking Areas
Driveway marble chip is a different specification from decorative border chip even when the colour is identical. It needs an angular face so the stones lock under tyres, a tight size band so it beds evenly, and enough hardness that it does not crush into dust in the wheel tracks.
- Angular crushed face that locks rather than rolls
- 10-20 mm and 20-40 mm driveway bands
- Washed so the surface stays bright after rain
- Loose bulk, jumbo bag or retail bag packing

Why 20-40 mm is the safer driveway band
Below about 10 mm, chip migrates into tyre treads and off the drive; above about 40 mm it is uncomfortable to walk on and hard to rake level. 20-40 mm is the band that holds under vehicle movement while still looking like decorative stone, with 10-20 mm used where a finer look is wanted on light-traffic drives.
Depth, edging and sub-base
A driveway typically takes 40-50 mm of stone over a compacted sub-base, not more — deeper loose stone rutts. Edge restraint matters more than depth: without timber, metal or stone edging any loose surface migrates regardless of the stone shape. Contractors who ask about coverage should work on roughly 13-14 square metres per tonne at 50 mm.
Marble versus granite for drives
Marble is softer than granite, so on a heavily used commercial entrance granite chip will last longer. For residential drives and light-traffic forecourts marble performs well and gives a brightness granite cannot match. We supply both, and we will say plainly when granite is the better call for the traffic described.
Ordering by area
Send the driveway area and intended depth and we will convert it to tonnage and container quantity. A 20 ft container of 25-27 tonnes covers roughly 340-370 square metres at 50 mm, which is many residential drives — most first orders are mixed loads across sizes and colours.
Wholesale, bulk and export details
This product is supplied on the same commercial basis as the rest of our range: quantity confirmed against container payload, packing quoted separately and documentation prepared to your broker's brief.
Questions buyers ask about marble chips for driveways
- Which size is best for a driveway?
- 20-40 mm for general vehicle use, 10-20 mm for light-traffic drives where a finer finish is wanted.
- How deep should driveway chips be laid?
- About 40-50 mm over a compacted sub-base. Deeper loose stone tends to rut.
- Will marble chips get dirty on a drive?
- White grades show tyre marks over time. Cream, yellow and mixed tones hide them far better and are the usual recommendation for busy drives.
- Do marble chips need a membrane underneath?
- A geotextile membrane over the sub-base reduces weed growth and stops stone punching into soft ground. Most contractors use one.
- How much stone does a driveway need?
- Roughly 13-14 square metres per tonne at 50 mm depth. Send us the area and we will convert it.
- Can I get a sample before ordering?
- Yes, we send a physical sample or current-batch photographs so your contractor can check shape and hardness.
