Slate chippings are flat and angular, so they interlock and stay where they are placed. That makes them a safer choice than rounded pebbles for sloped beds, paths and anywhere foot traffic pushes stone around.
Colour and texture
Dry, black slate reads charcoal with a dusty matte surface. Wet or sealed, it deepens to a near-black sheen. The change is more dramatic than with most stone, so buyers should see the stone both wet and dry before specifying.
Size selection
10–20 mm is the best all-round size for beds and paths. 5–10 mm works for finer ground cover and between paving, while 20–40 mm suits feature beds and areas where a chunkier texture is wanted.
Coverage per tonne
At 40–50 mm depth, one tonne of 10–20 mm black slate chippings covers roughly 12–14 square metres. Slate is relatively light, so coverage per tonne is slightly better than denser granite chippings.
Installation tips
A woven weed membrane and firm edging are essential. Slate chippings are light enough to be kicked or washed aside if the edges are not contained. Without membrane, weeds root through quickly.
Sealing for the wet look
A breathable, penetrating sealer keeps slate looking wet-dark permanently. Test on a small area first — some sealers leave a gloss that not every client wants.

- How deep should black slate chippings be laid?

- Not usually. The flat pieces naturally interlock. Edging is more important than stabiliser.
