Rock Mulch and Stone Ground Cover in Bulk

Rock mulch is replacing bark across dry and water-restricted regions because it does not decompose, blow away or need replacing every second season. For a supply yard it is a higher-value, lower-return line than organic mulch.

  • Does not decompose or need annual topping up
  • Suppresses weeds when laid over membrane
  • Reflects less heat in lighter colours
  • Bulk, jumbo bag or retail pack

Rock mulch versus bark

Bark breaks down, needs replacing every one to three years and floats off in heavy rain. Stone stays put, does not feed weeds as it decomposes, and does not attract termites near a building line. The upfront cost is higher; the total cost over five years is usually lower, which is the argument that wins commercial specifications.

Colour choice and heat

Darker stone absorbs more heat and radiates it into the root zone, which matters in hot climates. Lighter tones — buff, white and pale grey — keep beds noticeably cooler and are the standard specification in Gulf and desert-region planting. In temperate climates the difference is largely aesthetic.

Depth, membrane and weed control

Rock mulch suppresses weeds by blocking light, so depth is what does the work: 50 mm minimum, 75 mm where the bed gets full sun. A permeable membrane underneath stops stone sinking into soil and prevents weeds rooting up through it, while still letting irrigation through.

Sizing for the location

10–20 mm reads as a fine, tidy mulch and stays in place on flat beds. 20–40 mm is the general workhorse. 40 mm and above is used on slopes and in windy or high-traffic locations where smaller stone would migrate.

Ordering by area

At 50 mm depth allow around 75–80 kg per square metre; at 75 mm allow 110–120 kg. Give us the total area and preferred depth and we will convert it to tonnes and tell you how many containers that is.

Questions buyers ask about rock mulch

Is rock mulch better than bark mulch?
For longevity and weed control, yes — it does not decompose or need annual replacement. Bark still has an advantage where you want the mulch to add organic matter to the soil as it breaks down.
How deep should rock mulch be laid?
50 mm as a minimum, 75 mm in full sun or where weed pressure is high. Depth is what blocks light, so a thin layer will not control weeds however good the stone.
Does rock mulch make beds too hot?
Dark stone can raise soil temperature noticeably in hot climates. Lighter buff, white and pale grey tones stay much cooler and are the usual choice in desert and Gulf-region planting.
Do I need a membrane underneath?
It is strongly recommended. A permeable membrane stops stone sinking into the soil and keeps weeds from rooting through, while still allowing water to reach the roots.
What size is best?
20–40 mm for general beds, 10–20 mm for a fine tidy finish, and 40 mm and above on slopes or windy sites where smaller stone would move.
How much do I need for 200 m²?
Roughly 15–16 tonnes at 50 mm depth. Send your area and depth and we will confirm the tonnage and container plan.
