How bulk gravel is priced
Gravel is quoted per tonne ex-works or FOB, with packing, inland haulage and freight itemised beneath it. Keeping those lines separate lets you swap packing formats or incoterms without renegotiating the stone price, and it makes a like-for-like comparison against another supplier straightforward.
Size bands and why they matter
A 10–20 mm band means the material passes a 20 mm screen and is retained on a 10 mm screen. Undersize fines are what make a delivery look dusty and reduce coverage. We state screen sizes rather than trade nicknames so there is no argument about what arrived.
Washed versus unwashed
Washed gravel costs slightly more per tonne but sells better in bags and performs better in drainage, where fines clog the void space. Unwashed is acceptable for sub-base and bulk fill. Tell us the end use and we will recommend the cheaper option where washing adds nothing.
Coverage maths for quoting your own customers
At a 50 mm depth, one tonne of 10–20 mm gravel covers roughly 10–12 square metres. At 30 mm for decorative beds it covers 16–18 square metres. Angular grades pack tighter and cover slightly less than rounded pebbles of the same nominal size.
Packing formats and how they change the payload
Loose bulk maximises tonnage but needs a tipping facility at your end. Jumbo bags of one tonne suit yard handling with a forklift. Retail bags of 20–25 kg cost more per tonne but arrive shelf-ready. A 20ft container typically carries 26–28 tonnes of gravel depending on density and packing.
Keeping repeat orders consistent
We retain a sealed reference sample from every shipment. The next production run is checked against it before loading, which is what stops the second container looking different from the first on your shelf or in a customer's driveway.

Questions buyers ask about bulk gravel
- What is the minimum bulk gravel order?
- One full container load. A 20ft container of gravel usually carries 26–28 tonnes depending on grade and packing format.
- Can you mix grades in one container?
- Yes. Mixed loads are common — for example three size bands or two colours in one container, palletised and labelled separately.
- Do you supply washed gravel?
- Yes. Washed and screened is standard for decorative and drainage grades; unwashed is available where the end use does not need it.
- How is bulk gravel quoted?
- Per tonne, with packing, haulage and freight listed as separate lines so you can compare and adjust each independently.
- Can you match a sample we already sell?
- Send photographs and a sample description. We match against our current production and send comparison photographs before you commit.
- How much gravel do I need per square metre?
- Roughly 60–70 kg per square metre at a 50 mm depth, or 40 kg at 30 mm for decorative beds.
