Black Marble Chips and Black Marble Gravel

Black marble chips give the sharpest contrast of any stone we ship: against white render, pale paving or green planting they read almost graphic. The grade matters more than the colour name — a true dense black marble holds its tone wet or dry, while cheaper dyed material greys off within a season.

Judging black marble grade before you order

Ask for a dry sample and a wet sample side by side. Good black marble deepens when wet and returns to the same tone dry; lower grades show grey veining or a chalky bloom once the surface dust is washed off. That single check filters out most of the material that causes complaints after the first rain.

Size bands and where each one sells

6-10 mm is the terrazzo and cast-stone size and also the neatest choice for pot topping. 10-20 mm is the volume band for borders and ground cover. 20-40 mm reads better across wide beds where a fine chip visually disappears, and 40-60 mm works as accent stone around feature planting.

Washing and dust control

Marble is soft enough that handling generates fines, and fines are what make a retail bag look grey on the shelf. We wash and screen after crushing rather than before, so the material bagged is the material the customer sees. Loose bulk loads for landscaping yards can be supplied unwashed at a lower price if dust is not a concern.

Packing options

Retail programmes take 20-25 kg poly bags, palletised and shrink-wrapped, with your own artwork if required. Yards and terrazzo plants normally take jumbo bags or loose bulk. Both formats can share one container when you are trialling a new colour.

Container quantities

A 20 ft container carries roughly 25-27 tonnes of marble chip. For a garden centre that is around 1,000-1,250 retail bags of a single colour, which is usually a full season on one line. Mixed loads across black, white and green marble let you test all three without three separate shipments.
