Insoluble grit and why size matters

Birds have no teeth and grind feed in the gizzard using hard, insoluble grit. If the grit is too fine it passes straight through and does nothing; too coarse and younger birds will not take it. That is why the product is sold in age-matched size bands rather than one grade.

Insoluble versus soluble grit

Insoluble flint or granite grit does the grinding work and stays in the gizzard. Soluble oyster shell grit dissolves and supplies calcium for shell quality. They serve different purposes and layer flocks normally need both, offered separately.

Washing and dust control

Dust in grit is a respiratory problem in a closed poultry house and a nuisance in retail packs. We wash and screen so fines are removed before packing, which also stops bags caking in storage.

Packing for the feed trade

Merchants typically take 25 kg bags or jumbo bags; pet and smallholder ranges use 1.5-5 kg printed packs. We can run both formats from the same production batch so the specification is identical across your range.

Consistency between deliveries

Feed customers notice variation immediately. We screen to fixed size bands and record the batch, so a repeat order matches the last one and complaints can be traced back to a specific production run.

Wholesale, bulk and export details

This product is supplied on the same commercial basis as the rest of our range: quantity confirmed against container payload, packing quoted separately and documentation prepared to your broker's brief.

Questions buyers ask about poultry & insoluble grit

What is the difference between poultry grit and oyster shell?
Poultry grit is insoluble and grinds feed in the gizzard. Oyster shell is soluble and supplies calcium for eggshells. Layers usually need both, offered in separate feeders.
Which size do chicks need?
1-2 mm chick grit. Growers move to 2-4 mm, and adult layers take 3-6 mm.
Is the grit washed and dust-free?
Yes, it is washed and screened to remove fines, which matters for both bird respiratory health and bag condition in storage.
Can you supply own-brand retail packs?
Yes, printed packs from 1.5 kg upwards to your artwork, alongside 25 kg merchant bags from the same batch.
Is granite grit acceptable instead of flint?
Yes, any hard insoluble stone works provided it is correctly graded and does not break down in the gizzard.
What quantities do you supply?
From part-container trial volumes up to full container loads in bulk or bagged formats.
