Rounded pebbles look natural and are comfortable underfoot but roll on slopes. Angular chippings lock together and stay in place on gradients and paths. Most gardens use pebbles in beds and chippings on paths.

Sizing for the job

8–12 mm suits pot topping and tight borders. 10–20 mm is the general-purpose bed size. 20–40 mm covers larger areas with fewer bags. Anything above 40 mm reads as a feature stone rather than ground cover.

Laying depth and weed control

A 40–50 mm layer over a permeable membrane suppresses weeds and stops soil surfacing. Thinner layers look economical in the yard but fail within a season, which generates returns and complaints.
