Why 10mm pebbles are so popular

The 10 mm grade hits a sweet spot: fine enough to look neat in a pot or bed, coarse enough to stay in place and not track indoors on shoes. It is the size most customers mean when they ask for 'pea gravel' or 'garden pebbles'.

Size bands and what buyers mean

We separate 8–12 mm and 10–20 mm rather than selling a wide 8–20 mm mix. The two bands look different in a bag and on the ground, so splitting them lets buyers stock the exact grade their customers expect.

Coverage and depth

At 40–50 mm depth, one tonne of 10 mm pebbles covers roughly 14–16 square metres. A 25 kg retail bag covers about 0.5 square metres at the same depth.

Path and bed use

10 mm pebbles are ideal for pedestrian paths, beds and pot topping. They are not suitable for driveways because rounded stone rolls and ruts under vehicle weight. For driveways we recommend angular chippings.

Retail bag appeal

10 mm is the standard retail bag size because it is easy to handle and visually consistent through a bag window. It is also the size most DIY customers default to for small garden jobs.

Weed membrane and edging

Even fine pebbles need a woven membrane underneath and firm edging on paths. Without these, weeds push through and the stone migrates onto surrounding surfaces within a season.

Colour options

White, black, honey, grey and mixed are the standard colours for 10 mm pebbles. White sells best for bright, modern schemes; black and honey are popular for contrast and natural planting.

Container payload

A 20ft container of 10 mm pebbles typically carries 25–27 tonnes. Mixed containers with larger cobbles or chippings are common for buyers building a full range.
