Riprap and Erosion Control Stone in Bulk
Riprap is bought on gradation and durability, not looks. We supply hard, angular armour stone in stated size bands with the abrasion and water-absorption figures your engineer needs before the material is approved for a bank, culvert or shoreline.
- Graded bands from 100 mm bedding stone to 400 mm armour
- Hard, angular granite and basalt — low absorption
- Gradation curve and test data supplied with each batch
- Loose bulk or jumbo bag for site handling

Available sizes
- 100–150 mm
- 150–250 mm

What makes stone suitable as riprap
Armour stone has to survive wetting, drying, frost and moving water for decades. That rules out soft sedimentary rock with high porosity. We supply granite and basalt with low water absorption and high compressive strength, angular rather than rounded so individual pieces key into each other and resist rolling under flow.
Gradation matters more than average size
A well-built revetment needs a spread of sizes so smaller stone locks the voids between larger pieces. Ordering a single tight band leaves an open matrix that scours from underneath. Tell us the D50 your design calls for and we supply the surrounding spread rather than one uniform size.
Filter layers and geotextile
Armour stone alone does not stop soil migrating out from behind it. A graded filter layer of 20–60 mm stone, or a geotextile beneath the armour, keeps the subgrade in place. We can quote the filter aggregate on the same order so both layers arrive together and the site is not held up waiting for the smaller fraction.
Handling, packing and site delivery
Armour stone above 200 mm is normally shipped loose in bulk because bagging offers little benefit at that size. Smaller bedding and filter grades travel well in jumbo bags, which speeds up placement where a grab or excavator is working in a confined channel.
Quantities and container planning
Riprap is dense, so a container reaches its weight limit well before it looks full. Give us the linear metres, slope angle and layer thickness and we will convert that into tonnage and container count rather than leaving you to estimate from volume.
Wholesale, bulk and export details
This product is supplied on the same commercial basis as the rest of our range: quantity confirmed against container payload, packing quoted separately and documentation prepared to your broker's brief.
Questions buyers ask about riprap & erosion control stone
- What size riprap do I need?
- It depends on flow velocity, slope angle and wave exposure. As a rough guide, low-energy drainage channels use 100–150 mm, general bank protection uses 150–250 mm, and exposed shoreline or high-velocity locations need 300 mm and above. Your design engineer sets the D50; we match the band around it.
- Do you provide test certificates?
- Yes. We supply water absorption, specific gravity and abrasion resistance figures for the quarry batch, along with a gradation analysis. If your specification names a particular standard, tell us at enquiry stage so we can confirm compliance before you commit.
- Is rounded river stone acceptable as riprap?
- Generally no for structural protection. Rounded stone rolls under flow and does not interlock, so a rounded revetment needs substantially larger pieces to achieve the same stability. Angular quarried rock is the standard choice.
- How much riprap fits in a container?
- Roughly 25–27 tonnes in a 20 ft container depending on the destination weight limit. Because armour stone stacks with large voids, the container is weight-limited rather than volume-limited, so the load looks part-empty by eye.
- Can you supply the filter layer too?
- Yes. Smaller graded aggregate for the filter course is normally quoted alongside the armour stone, often in jumbo bags so it is easier to place accurately beneath the larger rock.
- How is riprap priced?
- Per tonne, ex-works or FOB, with packing and freight itemised separately. Larger armour bands cost more per tonne because quarry yield of big sound pieces is lower.
