A container of pebbles hits its maximum permitted weight with space still visible above the load, and buyers who plan on cubic capacity end up with a quantity that cannot legally move on the road at the other end. Why a 20 ft container is the norm for stone
A 20 ft container has a lower internal volume but the same practical weight ceiling as many road limits allow. Filling a 40 ft box with dense stone would exceed permitted weight long before the box is full, so the extra space is wasted. The exception is light, bulky, palletised retail bags, where volume runs out first and a 40 ft becomes efficient.
Maximum payload is set by the container's own rating and, more restrictively, by road weight limits at the destination. A tonnage that is legal in one country can be over the limit for a road haul in another, which is why we ask for your destination before confirming quantity.
Loose, jumbo bag or palletised
Loose loading gives the highest tonnage and the lowest packing cost, and suits landscape yards that tip stone into bays. Jumbo bags — typically one tonne — make handling easy with a forklift and keep grades separated inside a mixed load. Palletised small bags cost the most per tonne and reduce payload, but they are the only format that can go straight onto a retail floor.
Many buyers mix formats in one container: jumbo bags for yard sale and a portion in retail bags to test shelf turnover.
Planning your load
Decide the destination road limit first, then the packing format, then the tonnage — in that order. Reversing it is how buyers end up needing to split a load at the port. If your load is mixed, tell us the priority products so the payload is allocated to what sells rather than divided evenly.
Loading and verification
Containers are stuffed with the load distributed across the floor rather than concentrated at one end, dunnage used where bags could shift, and photographs taken during stuffing. Ask for those photographs on any first order — they also serve as evidence if a claim is ever needed.

- In practice the load is capped by weight, commonly in the mid-to-high twenties of tonnes, and the exact figure depends on packing format and the road weight rules at your destination. We confirm it against your specific route rather than quoting a universal number.
- Is a 40 ft container ever worth it for stone?
- Mainly for light, palletised retail bags where volume runs out before weight does. For dense loose stone it usually is not.
- Can different products share one container?
- Yes. Grades are bagged and marked separately so they can be received without re-sorting.
- Do jumbo bags reduce how much I can ship?
- Slightly, because of the bag weight and the space between bags, but the handling saving at your end usually outweighs it.
