Playground Pebbles and Rounded Play Gravel

Stone specified for children's play has one non-negotiable requirement: no sharp edges. That means naturally tumbled rounded stone, washed to remove dust, screened so undersize fines are not present, and consistent enough that an inspector sees the same material across the whole area.

Rounded, not crushed

Crushed aggregate is cheaper and completely unsuitable here — the fractured faces are sharp enough to graze. Naturally tumbled river and beach stone has no cut faces at all, which is why it is the material specified for loose-fill play zones and sensory beds.

Dust, washing and cleanliness

Play stone gets handled constantly, so residual dust ends up on hands and clothing. Everything shipped for this use is washed and dried, and screened to remove the undersize fraction that otherwise settles to the bottom of the bed and turns to mud.

Size and swallowing risk

For areas used by very young children, larger sizes are usually specified so individual stones are not a mouth-sized hazard. 20–40 mm is a common choice for toddler areas, while 8–20 mm is more usual where older children are the primary users. Local guidance varies, so check the standard that applies at your destination.

Depth, drainage and maintenance

A loose-fill play bed needs enough depth to stay covered under heavy use — 75–100 mm is typical — laid over a permeable membrane so it drains after rain and does not mix into the soil beneath. Raking and topping up annually keeps the level even.

Supply consistency for phased projects

School and municipal projects often run in phases across a year. We hold a sealed reference sample so the second and third phases match the first, which avoids the visible patchwork that comes from re-sourcing mid-project.

Questions buyers ask about playground pebbles

Is gravel safe for a children's play area?
Rounded, washed pebble is widely used for loose-fill play zones because it has no sharp edges and drains freely. Crushed angular aggregate is not suitable. Always check the safety standard that applies in your country for the specific play equipment and fall heights involved.
What size pebble should a play area use?
20–40 mm is common where very young children are present so stones are not a mouth-sized hazard; 8–20 mm is more typical for older children. Local guidance takes precedence.
How deep should it be laid?
75–100 mm over a permeable membrane is typical for loose-fill areas, so the ground stays covered under heavy use and drains after rain.
Is the stone dust-free?
It is washed, dried and screened to remove fines before packing, which matters here more than in any other application because the material is handled directly.
Does it meet impact-attenuation requirements?
Loose-fill stone is used as ground cover, not as certified impact-attenuating surfacing. Where a fall height requires a tested safety surface, that is a separate specification — we supply the decorative and loose-fill element only.
Can you match later phases of a project?
Yes. We hold a sealed reference sample from your approved batch so phase two and three match phase one rather than arriving as a visible patch.
