Why 20mm pebbles are the default landscaping size

The 20 mm grade is large enough to look substantial in a bed, small enough to spread easily and light enough to handle. It works in almost every decorative application except high-traffic driveways.

Size bands

We separate 10–20 mm and 20–40 mm. The 10–20 mm band is finer and better for paths and pot topping. The 20–40 mm band is chunkier and better for feature beds and water features.

Coverage and depth

At 50 mm depth, one tonne of 20–40 mm pebbles covers roughly 12–14 square metres. A 25 kg bag covers about 0.4 square metres at the same depth.

Best uses

20 mm pebbles are ideal for beds, borders, water features and ground cover. They are not suitable for daily-use driveways, where angular chippings are a better choice.

Retail and bulk formats

20 mm pebbles sell well in 20–25 kg retail bags and in jumbo bags for trade. The same washed stone goes into both formats, so quality is consistent across channels.

Colour options

White, black, honey, grey and mixed are the standard colours. White and black are the strongest sellers; honey and grey suit naturalistic planting schemes.

Installation notes

A 50 mm depth over a woven membrane is standard for beds. Edging is recommended on paths and anywhere the stone meets lawn or paving to stop migration.

Container payload

A 20ft container of 20 mm pebbles typically carries 24–26 tonnes. Mixed containers with other sizes and colours are common for range building.
