Why size mix matters in a dry creek bed

A natural creek bed is not uniform. The most convincing installations use a few large anchor rocks, plenty of mid-size cobbles and smaller pebbles in the channel base. Using only one size looks artificial and uses material inefficiently.

Choosing a colour family

Grey and mixed river rock looks most natural in temperate schemes. White stone reads as a dry creek in bright climates. Black and charcoal stones suit modern, architectural interpretations.

Planning the size ratio

A typical dry creek bed uses 60–70% mid-size cobbles and pebbles, 20–30% larger cobbles and boulders, and a small amount of fine gravel for the channel base. We can advise on ratios once you share the bed length and width.

Drainage function

Dry creek beds are often drainage features, not just decoration. The stone layer should sit over a free-draining sub-base with a slight fall so water moves through rather than pooling. Without proper drainage, the creek bed becomes a muddy trench.

Edging and containment

The creek bed needs a clear edge so stone does not migrate into lawn or planting. Larger rocks placed along the margins help define the channel and hold smaller stone in place during heavy rain.

Weed control

A woven membrane under the creek bed stops weeds rooting through. In a dry creek, the membrane also keeps the stone from mixing with soil beneath, preserving the layered look.

Retail and project supply

Landscape contractors usually buy dry creek stone in bulk by size. Garden centres may sell smaller feature rock and pebble packs for DIY rain gardens. We can supply both channels from the same material batch.

A 20ft container of mixed dry creek stone typically carries 24–26 tonnes. We load larger rocks low and evenly across the floor, with smaller bagged material above to avoid damage in transit.
