Black Basalt Pebbles and Basalt Stone
Basalt gives the deepest natural black available in landscaping stone, and unlike coated products the colour is the rock itself. Wet it and it goes almost jet black, which is why it dominates water feature work.
- Deep, even natural black — no coating or dye
- Hard, dense stone with low water absorption
- Dramatic wet-look finish for water features
- Rounded pebbles and split cobble profiles

Why basalt reads darker than other black stone
Basalt is a fine-grained volcanic rock with very little light-coloured mineral content, so it holds a consistent dark tone across a whole load. Cheaper black stone often shows grey banding once it is spread, which is what buyers complain about.
Wet and dry appearance
Dry basalt reads charcoal; wet it deepens to near black with a natural sheen. Where the client expects the wet look permanently, a polished grade or a stone sealer is the honest recommendation rather than promising the raw stone stays glossy.
Durability and heat
Basalt is dense and hard-wearing with low absorption, so it resists frost damage and does not crumble. It does absorb heat in full sun, which is worth flagging for barefoot areas around pools.
Sizes and where each is used
10–20 mm covers beds and paths. 20–40 mm suits larger areas and pond margins. 40–100 mm cobbles are used as feature stone, drip lines and water feature bases where individual stones are meant to be seen.
Washing and dust
Dark stone shows dust more obviously than light stone — a grey film on black basalt is immediately visible. Every load is washed and dried before packing so the bag matches the sample.
Pairing basalt in a product range
Black basalt sells strongest next to a bright white and a warm honey stone. Buyers stocking all three convert more customers than those stocking multiple dark shades, because the contrast is what drives the purchase decision.

Questions buyers ask about black basalt pebbles
- Is basalt naturally black?
- Yes. Basalt is a dark volcanic rock — the colour is the stone itself and it is not coated or dyed.
- Does black basalt fade in sunlight?
- It does not fade, though surface dust can lighten the appearance. Rinsing restores the tone.
- What size is best for water features?
- 20–40 mm for margins and beds, with 40–100 mm cobbles as feature stones in and around the water.
- Can basalt be used around pools?
- Yes, though dark stone gets hot in direct sun. Lighter grades are more comfortable for barefoot areas.
- Do you supply polished black basalt?
- Yes, polished grades give the permanent wet look without sealing.
- What formats are available?
- Loose bulk, jumbo bags and 20–25 kg retail bags from the same washed batch.
