When to use large pebbles
Large pebbles stop behaving like a surface and start reading as objects. Use them to create focal points, edge water features, build dry creek beds or add weight to borders. They are not a substitute for ground-cover gravel over large areas.
Size and visual weight
40–60 mm is the smallest size that still reads as a cobble rather than gravel. 60–100 mm is the standard feature size for beds and water features. Above 100 mm the stones become individual placements rather than a spread.
Coverage per tonne
Large pebbles cover far less area per tonne than fine gravel. At 75–100 mm depth, one tonne of 60–100 mm pebbles covers roughly 6–8 square metres. Buyers should calculate by area and depth, not by weight alone.
Combining large and small stone
The most effective schemes use a smaller ground-cover grade across the main area and large pebbles as accents. This uses material efficiently and creates visual hierarchy.
Water feature use
Large rounded pebbles are ideal for water features because they look good wet, do not trap debris and are heavy enough to stay in place under circulation. Avoid small gravel near pump intakes.
Handling and placement
Large pebbles are heavy and usually placed by hand or machine. We can pack in manageable bags or bulk for site handling. Tell us your access and handling setup when you enquire.
Colour and finish
Black and mixed grey are the most popular large pebble colours for modern schemes. White makes a strong statement but shows dirt. Polished finishes are available for interior and high-end water features.
Container loading for large stone
Large pebbles and cobbles reduce the usable volume in a container because they cannot be stacked as tightly as fine gravel. A 20ft container of mixed large and small stone typically carries 24–26 tonnes, with larger rocks loaded low to avoid damage.
Wholesale, bulk and export details
