Limestone vs marble chippings

Marble is whiter and holds its brightness longer; limestone is warmer, softer and considerably cheaper per tonne. For large ground-cover areas most buyers take limestone and reserve marble for feature beds.

Weathering and cleaning

Limestone dulls with algae in shaded, damp positions. In those situations we recommend a larger band and better drainage so the stone dries between rain.

Coverage for driveways and beds

One tonne of 10–20 mm limestone gravel covers roughly 13–15 square metres at 40–50 mm depth; for planting beds most buyers run a thinner 35 mm layer, stretching coverage to around 17–18 square metres per tonne.

How limestone ages compared with marble

Fresh limestone reads bright cream to buff; within a season it settles to a warmer, slightly duller tone as fine dust works into the surface pores, whereas marble keeps a harder, brighter face for longer because it is less porous. Buyers wanting the bright day-one look for years should budget for marble instead.

A common buyer mistake

Ordering limestone gravel for pond or water feature edges without checking pH sensitivity of nearby aquatic planting — limestone leaches calcium carbonate slowly and can raise water hardness over time, which matters for soft-water fish species and ericaceous plants alike.

Container loading and tonnage

A 20ft container of 10–20 mm limestone gravel typically carries 25–26 tonnes as loose bulk, slightly more than an equivalent volume of marble due to limestone's marginally higher density in some deposits. Buyers combining limestone with a lighter product such as lava rock in one mixed container should plan the split by weight first, since limestone will use a disproportionate share of the payload relative to its visual volume.

Retail bag versus bulk contractor supply

Garden centres typically want 20–25 kg printed retail bags for shelf sale, while landscape contractors and builders' merchants doing driveway or large bed work take loose bulk tonnage or jumbo bags. Edging for driveway and path use

Angular limestone chippings hold their position reasonably well once compacted, but a firm edge restraint at path or driveway margins stops the material spreading onto adjoining lawn or beds under vehicle turning and rain runoff. Without edging, the outer few centimetres of a limestone driveway typically need annual raking back into position, which a simple kerb or edging strip avoids almost entirely.
