Horticultural Grit and Potting Grit
Horticultural grit is a small-volume, high-margin line for garden centres — and one where buyers care about two things only: that it is washed, and whether it is lime-free.

- 2–6 mm grit and finer propagation grades
- Retail packs, jumbo bags and bulk

Lime-free matters more than size
Grit containing limestone raises pH and kills ericaceous plants. Growers and serious gardeners check this first. We supply granite and quartz-based lime-free grit and state the source rock on the specification sheet so the claim is verifiable.
Washing and salt content
Unwashed grit carries clay and, from some sources, salt — both damaging in a pot. Our grit is washed in fresh water and dried before packing, which also stops the bag caking during shipping.
Sizes for different growing uses
2–6 mm is the general horticultural grade for improving drainage in compost. 1–3 mm suits propagation and seed covering. 4–8 mm is used as decorative pot top dressing where a coarser look is wanted.
Blending ratios for potting mixes
A typical free-draining mix runs one part grit to three parts compost; alpine and cactus mixes go as high as one to one. Stocking a single 2–6 mm grade covers nearly all of these use cases.
Retail packaging that sells
Grit sells in smaller units than landscape stone — 5 kg, 10 kg and 20 kg bags are the common retail formats. We pack to your printed bag or supply plain for your own labelling.
Bulk supply for compost blenders
Blenders take jumbo bags or loose bulk with a consistency guarantee, because a change in grit size alters the drainage characteristics of a finished compost line. We hold reference samples for exactly this reason.
Wholesale, bulk and export details
This product is supplied on the same commercial basis as the rest of our range: quantity confirmed against container payload, packing quoted separately and documentation prepared to your broker's brief.
