Why sandstone reads differently to granite
Sandstone carries warm buff and golden tones and a softer surface texture, so paths look settled rather than newly built. In conservation and period settings that is often a planning requirement rather than a preference.
Angular chippings bed down
Because the chippings are angular they knit together underfoot instead of rolling, which makes them workable on paths and light-traffic areas where rounded pea gravel would scatter.
Softness and where not to use it
Sandstone is softer than granite and will break down faster under vehicle traffic or heavy machinery. For a driveway carrying daily car use we would steer you to granite or limestone and keep sandstone for pedestrian areas.
Self-binding path grades
A graded sandstone with fines compacts into a firm, semi-bound path surface that is easier to walk on than loose stone and suits accessible routes. Say if you need the fines retained, as washed material will not bind.
Coverage and depth
One tonne of 10-20 mm covers roughly 12-14 square metres at 50 mm depth. Paths perform best at 40-50 mm over a compacted sub-base with an edge restraint to hold the material in line.
Wholesale, bulk and export details
This product is supplied on the same commercial basis as the rest of our range: quantity confirmed against container payload, packing quoted separately and documentation prepared to your broker's brief.
Questions buyers ask about sandstone chippings
- Can sandstone chippings be used on a driveway?
- For occasional light use, yes, but sandstone is softer than granite and degrades faster under regular vehicle traffic. Granite or limestone is the better driveway choice.
- Do sandstone chippings bind into a firm surface?
- The graded grades with fines retained compact into a semi-bound surface. Washed chippings stay loose.
- What colours are available?
- Buff, golden, and grey-green are the standard families. Colour varies naturally within a batch, which is part of the material's character.
- Does sandstone go slippery when wet?
- Loose chippings drain well and stay grippy. Algae can form in permanent shade, so keep damp routes clear of overhanging planting.
- How deep should chippings be laid?
- 40-50 mm on paths over a compacted base, and around 50 mm in beds over a weed membrane.
- Is a membrane needed underneath?
- In beds, yes, it keeps weeds down and stops the stone sinking into soil. On paths a compacted sub-base matters more than the membrane.
